JSX Copy Editor

# Edit JSX copy without hunting through components

For supported literal text in JSX and TSX, a source grouped panel can make a focused copy pass easier while keeping edits undoable in VS Code.

Changing a sentence in a component is easy when you know exactly which file contains it. A copy review across a page can be less direct: text may be spread among a route component and several local components. JSX Copy Editor gathers supported literal text from the active JSX or TSX file and statically traversed local imports into a panel, grouping fields by source file and showing source line labels.

## Use the panel for a focused wording pass

For example, a page might render a welcome heading from app/page.tsx and a short promise from a locally imported banner component. Open a JSX or TSX file in VS Code, run Copy Editor: Open from the Command Palette, and review the fields in the panel. Seeing text grouped by file gives an editor or reviewer a compact way to compare phrasing without searching each component manually.

Change the wording in the fields, then choose Save Changes. The extension applies a VS Code workspace edit to the source document, so the normal undo command can reverse it. The edit updates the VS Code document buffer; save the files as usual. After a successful save, the panel refreshes. To extract current source again, close and reopen the panel. The [JSX Copy Editor guide](https://plugins.brownsmithdynamics.com/jsx-copy-editor/) walks through those steps.

## Keep edits within the supported source

The tool reads static source structure; it does not reproduce the runtime DOM order of a rendered page. The supported scope is literal JSX text. Dynamic expressions, props, maps, conditionals, template content, and attribute values are outside that scope. If a sentence is assembled from a variable or produced by a conditional, expect to edit it in the source directly.

That boundary is useful to keep in mind during review. Treat the panel as a focused view of supported literal copy, not as a complete inventory of every string a visitor might see. Check the rendered application after editing, especially when text is affected by runtime data or surrounding layout. The extension rejects stale source selections before applying edits, and it avoids repeated component visits during static traversal.

## Keep source control in your normal workflow

A copy edit still changes project files, so inspect the diff and run your usual project checks before shipping. The extension itself does not configure your project or send workspace contents to a service. It has no backend, AI service, network calls, or telemetry. Version 1.0.1 is being prepared for the VS Code Marketplace; its listing is not live yet.

Source and local setup notes are available in the [JSX Copy Editor GitHub project](https://github.com/apnatvar/plugins/tree/main/jsx-copy-editor). For more about its maker, visit [Brownsmith Dynamics](https://brownsmithdynamics.com/).

Before a larger pass, make a small wording change and inspect the source diff. This confirms which files changed and gives reviewers a clear record of the copy updates before the edits move through the project's usual review and release process.
